Fifty Years of Tiger Recovery: Is the Glass Half Empty or Half Full?

K. Ullas Karanth will describe the last five decades of global tiger population recovery, highlighting India's unique role in the enterprise. Dr Karanth will question the widely-held notions about tiger conservation in India and its possible future direction. Based on scientific and conservation experiences,  he will recommend an alternative conservation strategy of "écomodernist decoupling" of extractive human uses from nature within a "sustainable landscapes" framework. Dr Karanth argues that such a strategy can attain tiger population recovery targets four to five times that of present numbers.

It is a practice of both wisdom and humility. The presence of wildlife in this practice has been recently recognised and still has a vastly underrated role in addressing ecological health, human well-being, and the carbon deficit.

Open Natural Ecosystems of India: Misrecognised, Undervalued and Threatened

India’s open natural ecosystems, its grasslands and savannas, have long suffered from a misperception that they are degraded and unproductive ecosystems. Lost Tigers of East-Central India: Past, Present and the Way Forward

The east-central Indian landscape has a long history of conflicts and tribal assertions over Jal, Jangal, Zameen (Water, Forest, Land). This slogan, critical to the Jharkhand movement, continues to resonate in many parts of Jharkhand, Chhattisgarh, and Odisha. However, in these debates over Jal Jangal Zameen, 'Jaanwar’ (wildlife or animals) has always been conspicuously absent. Emblematic of this absence and its fallout is the disappearance of tigers across this vast landscape due to the collapse of entire food chains which have created tens of thousands of sq.km. of "empty forests". Through the story of tigers of this landscape, the talk will examine the intertwined pasts of wildlife and people from the Adivasi-dominated forests of east-central India, the state of wildlife and conservation in these regions, as well as the role of community, state, and non-state actors in this status quo, and possibilities for a better future for both wildlife and people.
